Prayer-Prière

I had a cold last week and it seems to have gone, but now I'm still sick.. let's hope it's only a flu... I've been throwing up and sleeping a lot! I have a really hard time eating and drinking.

Your prayers would be greatly appreciated.

J'avais un rhume la semaine passée et il semble être guérit, mais là je crois avoir le flu... espérons que ce n'est rien de plus grave. J'ai de la difficulté à garder la nourriture et les liquides; je les vomis... j'ai pratiquement passé la journée d'hier et d'aujourd'hui à dormir alors prions que je me remettes vite sur pieds.

Maison Damas

I just came back from my weekend visit at Maison Damas, a community in Yaounde that is about 20 minutes outside of where I live at the moment. Andrea and I were welcomed with open arms. Our host family was so nice to us! They really treated us like royalty! It was so humbling to see people who had less than us be so generous. We had amazing home cooked meals with fried plantains with lunches and dinners (we have those every meal at the SIL center also). We also had fish and spaghetti with fish in the sauce (fish has also been a recurring part of my diet; they cook it with different spices which all taste really good). As soon as we got there, we were introduced to the whole household, their relatives and people living with them. We then took a walk around town. We were really privileged to be with such a caring family! We went to church and they showed us around, introduced us to many people, showed us how to dance, do laundry by hand, draw water from the well, cut plantains… We learned a lot! Andrea and I had such a good time, we hope to visit again when we are back in the city in April! 

 

Je viens de revenir de ma visite à Maison Damas cette fin de semaine. C’est une petite communauté qui fait partie de Yaoundé, à environs 20 minutes d’où j’habite en ce moment. Andrea et moi avons été accueillies chaleureusement! Nos hôtes étaient si gentils! Nous avons été vraiment très bien traitées! De voir des gens si généreux envers nous, qui avons évidemment plus de moyens qu’eux était vraiment un concept que l’on ne retrouve pas en Amérique du Nord. Nos avons vraiment été gâtées côté nourriture: des bananes plantains frites à chaque diner et souper (faisant aussi parti de notre diète quotidienne ici à la SIL), du poisson (très bien apprêté ici), du spaghetti avec du poisson dans la sauce… Nos hôtes ont étés si accueillants! Dès notre arrivée, Andréa et moi avons été présentées à toute la famille, le cousin qui vivait avec eux et aussi les autres locataires qui habitaient avec eux. Nous avons même eu une visite guidée de la ville! Nous avons été si bénie d’avoir été hébergé chez cette famille! Ensemble, nous sommes allés à l’église, ils nous ont montré comment danser, faire notre lavage à la main, puiser l’eau d’un puis, couper des plantains… Ce ne serait pas nécessaire de mentionner que nous avons appris beaucoup! Nous avons tellement eu du bon temps toutes les deux que nous espérons aller les revisiter au mois d’avril quand nous serons de retour à Yaoundé.

Le troisième jour/The third day

 

L’Afrique m’a accueillie les bras ouverts mardi soir dernier. Nos hôtes sont venus nous chercher directement à l’aéroport et une Nissan Patrol nous y attendais pour le voyage jusqu’au Centre de la SIL. Andréa, l’autre stagiaire et moi étions dans les mêmes vols. Nous avions deux escales et voyagions avec trois compagnies aériennes différents, mais par la grâce de Dieu, nous n’avons pas perdu nos valises! J’ai peine à croire que ma troisième journée ici arrive à sa fin. Tellement s’est passé depuis mon arrivée!

Côté nourriture et température, tout va très bien! C’est certain que je vais devoir m’habituer à la nourriture Camerounaise mais à date, mon estomac et mes papilles semblent apprécier! En ce moment, et cela jusqu’au 15 février, je suis dans la capitale: Yaoundé. Ici c’est la grande saison sèche donc il fait chaud mais ce n’est pas un climat accablant… Je dois avouer que ça ne me dérange pas trop de m’enfuir de l’hiver!

Cette semaine ainsi que les trois prochaines semaines, je suis un cours de formation pour missionnaires et linguistes. C’est très encourageant de parler et vivre avec de jeunes familles qui ont décidés de dédier leurs vies au Cameroun! Ils ne savent pas ce qui les attends mais ils ont hâte de savoir!

Pour la première fois aujourd'hui, je suis allée au marché! Je ne sais pas si vous avez déjà expérimenté ça, mais c’est tout un défi! Même le transport et taxi pour s’y rendre… (à la place d’écrire dix page de descriptions sur mon blog par rapport à certains évènements.. comme une visite au marché ou bien un voyage en taxi, j’aimerais mieux tout vous raconter mes anecdotes une fois à la maison!)

Demain matin vers dix heures, je pars à l’aventure. Andréa et moi allons habiter chez une famille Camerounaise pour la fin de semaine. J’ai hâte de tout vous raconter!

 

Africa welcomed me with arms wide opened last tuesday night. I got picked up at the airport by my hosts and we headed to the SIL Center. Andrea, the other intern, and I were on the same flight and even though we had two layovers and three different airlines, we did not loose our luggage: Glory to God! It is weird to think that this is my third day in Cameroon because so much has happened since my arrival.

I am attending a missionary and linguist’s crash course for work on the field which continues for another three weeks. It is so encouraging to be surrounded by people, mostly young families, stepping into God’s will for their lives by coming to an unknown country and devote their lives to literacy, and translation. They have no idea what awaits them on this path but they are ready to take the risk.

Since people often wonder about food and temperature: here is a little sneak peak. My body seems to be adjusting well to the warm weather and doesnt miss too much the harsh saskatchewan winter! We are now in the long dry season which goes from Novermber 15th to March 15th. As for food, my stomach has been digesting everything well so far and my taste buds enjoy the new tastes and the wonderful fresh fruits!

Today, I went to the market! What an adventure! Oh what an adventure! Hopefully it’ll get less stressful as weeks and months pass by. If you have even been in a similar situation, you would know what I mean! Even taking the taxi to get there was a culture shock! (I would love to tell you all about every little detail but since I don’t want to end up with ten-page post, I’ll have to wait to share with you when I come back home!)

Tomorrow at around 10oclock I will be on my way for a week-end home-stay at a Cameroonian family. I will try to update you on that as soon as I come back.

Toronto!

Ça y est! Je suis rendue à Toronto!

Hier soir, mon vol a été retardé à plusieurs reprises, mais tout s'est bien passé! J'ai passé une bonne nuit de sommeil dans un hotel et mon training commence dans trois heures! J'ai très hâte de finalement rencontrer Andrea, l'autre stagiaire qui vient au Cameroun avec moi! Je viens juste de revenir de la banque (on a du en faire trois!) pour changer mes dollars Canadiens en Euros.

Toronto, finally!

Last night, my flight had to be delayed twice due to bad weather in Toronto, but I did get here safe and sound. I had a great night at the hotel and my official training starts in three hours! I am really excited to meet Andrea, the other intern going to Cameroon with me! I just came back from the bank (I had to go to three!) to change my Canadian dollars to Euros.
