she is really overwhelmed; she’s got so much to do and on top of that, she is traveling to Canada for a month for the Unbound conference and mettings. Let’s pray that she has a great relaxing time at the beach at Kribi this weekend.

elle est vraiment débordée; elle a tellement de pain sur la planche et en plus elle s’en va au Canada pour un mois pour une conférence (Unbound) et des meetings. Prions pour que notre temps à la plage pusse être relaxant pour elle.

with everything happening in Ivory Coast, it has been fairly safe here so far, but now some people seem to be more alarmed and an attack to a westerner happened downtown yesterday so we had to restrain from going into town. Pray that we will be safe as well as all the other Westerners here for spiritual retreat and branch meeting until the end of the month.

avec tout se qui se passe en Côte d’Ivoire, jusqu’à date tout était ok ici et nous étions en sécurité, mais dernièrement, on dirait qu’il y a plus de mouvement et même que hier, il y a un un Occidental qui a été attaqué dans le centre ville alors nous avons reçu un courriel nous disant de ne pas nous aventurer dans ce coin. Prions pour la sécurité pour nous et pour tout les autre Occidentaux qui sommes ici dans la capitale pour la retraite spirituelle et pour les réunions annuelles de la SIL Cameroun jusqu’à la fin du mois.

YAOUNDÉ

HEYY!!

I am in Yaoundé for a month! = internet!!!! oh yeah!! I'll be writing soon and putting pictures up!

Oh and by the way the 13 hour drive here went good; even though my body is still recovering :)

Je suis à Yaoundé pour un mois! = internet!!!! oh yeah!! (yup, je viens de traduire ça aussi!) Je vais réécrire bientôt et je vais aussi mettre des photos!

Et en passant, la route de 13 heures pour me rendre de Yoka à Yde était très bonne; à part le fait que je suis raquée! :)

YOKA!

This has been my third week here in Yokadouma! It’s been going by so quickly! Thank you so much for all your prayers! I am in good health, and even though I might never get used to the heat, I drink lots of water and take naps in order to have energy!

Here are some things I did in the past weeks:

- having a debreefing meeting every saturday with Henny, David and Andrea: really useful and stretching
-reading books in order to do book reports for school –two done, one on the go
-meeting with people from the office of COCELMPU (the inter-church comitee) and interviewing them for my ethnographic study
-editing the interview recordings and transcribe them
-writing and designing the Thormosets’ newsletter both in French and English
-translate their prayer calendar
-have a plan to help teach french to Henny and Andrea
-green-lighting ideas for ethnographic study
-draw up a plan for ethn. stud.
-met with president of COCELMPU and had my project approved: ethn. stud.
-write up reports of cultural activities (internship requirements)
-meeting with ladies in their houses –usually as they do cooking; it is a great learning experience to learn words in Mpumpong as well
-visited many churches and attended wednesday prayer meeting
-try to take a nap everyday so the heat doesnt affect my productivity
-keep in contact with family and friends
-movie nights at home with popcorn!
-alternating between washing dishes and cooking –which takes so much longer than in our “instant” culture
-going to the market
-going out of the house on my own (buy bread, go to church… it took me two weeks to work up the courage to do that…)

I am excited to see what the next five weeks will bring me, and hopefully I will be able to update you once more before I go back to Yaounde on April 8th.

Ça fait déjà trois semaines que je suis à Yokadouma! C’est incroyable comment ça se passe vite! Merci du fond du coeur pour toutes vos prières! Je suis en bonne santé, et même si je ne vais surement jamais m’habituer à la chaleur, je bois beaucoup d’eau et je prends des siestes pour m’assurer d’avoir assez d’énergie!

Voici un coup d’oeil sur ce que j’ai fait à date ici:

-un meeting hebdomadaire avec David, Henny et Andrea
-lu deux livres (sur trois) pour mes rapports de lecture pour l’école
-meeting avec des employés de COCELMPU (le comité inter-églises) et les interviewer
-travailler sur les fichiers audio des interviews et les transcirre
-designer et écrire la lettre de nouvelles des Thormosets en français et en anglais
-traduire leur calendrier de prière en français
-avoir un plan pour aider Andrea et Henny avec leur français
-faire un brouillon d’idées et de questions pour mon étude ethnographique
-faire un plan pour mener ma recherche ethnographique
-rencontrer le président de COCELMPU et avoir mon projet approuvé
-écrire des rapports d’activité culturelles (pour mon stage)
-rencontrer des dames chez elles dans leurs maisons: un bon environnement pour voir comment elles cuisinent et apprendre quelques mots Mpumpong
-visiter plusieurs églises et aller dans des réunions de prière les mercredis
-essayer de prendre une sieste occasionnellement
-rester en contact avec ma famille et mes amis
-des soirées de films avec du popcorn! (je suis gâtée!)
-alterner avec les tâches de cuisiner et de faire le ménage et la vaisselle
-aller au marché
-sortir de la maison par moi-même (acheter du pain, aller à l’église… ça m’a pris deux semaines pour avoir le courage…)

J’ai très hâte de voir ce que ces prochaines semaines me réservent! J’espère être capable de vous donner plus de nouvelles au moins une autre fois avant mon voyage vers Yaoundé le 8 avril.

RFIS Middle School Retreat

 

I must admit, after so many years working at various camps, I wasn’t so excited to get involved in this retreat.

I almost just wanted to help by being invisible. To a certain extent, it did happen, but in a good way.

See, I wanted to just find something to do to pass time but God had another idea in mind.
He allowed me to connect with four wonderful girls and to be their small group leader.

It has been such a blessing to hold them as they cried , laughed with them, play and enjoy our time together. Thanks God!

 

 

 

 

Pour être honnête avec vous,
même après avoir travaillé dans des camps pendant plusieurs années, je n’étais pas super excitée de participer à cette retraite.

J’avais seulement envie d’aider… mais pas en premier plan; dans les coulisses. Et c’est ce qui s’est passé … dans un certain sens; dans un bon sens.

Je voulais seulement être utile ici et aider là où il y avait un besoin. Dieu avait un autre plan en tête…et il m’a confié quatre jeunes-filles! J’étais responsable de leur groupe.

J’ai été tellement bénie de pouvoir être là pour ces filles : les serrer dans mes bras alors qu’elles pleuraient, rire avec elles, avoir du fun dans les activités… Merci Seigneur!

It’s the middle of the dry season here…
but it rained yesterday. It felt like God’s
reminder of his presence, like a renewal of His promises as a whisper: I’m with you; I’ll provide for you and protect you. I could see all around me His creation and as I sat in front of my computer and read emails from friends and family from back home; I felt loved and cared for.

On est en pleine saison sèche ici…
mais il a plu hier. C’était tout comme si Dieu me soufflait à l’oreille qu’il est là avec moi et qu’il prends soin de moi.
Il a pourvu dans le passé et il pourvoira de la même façon. Je n’ai qu’à regarder autour de moi pour admirer sa création; je n’ai qu’à lire mes courriels et être encouragée. Merci de prendre part à cette aventure avec moi!

This week has been mainly staying in the house here in Yaounde. I’ve been applying for scholarships and bursaries for next school year, starting school assignments and my ethnographic proposal for this semesters’ classes. I also started looking at the Mpumpong language and trying to familiarize myself with the material that exists in order to start learning it. I have been able to really spend a lot of time in prayer and in reading my Bible so it has been really good. I have been busy with living: laundry, dishes, cooking, cleaning… it takes so much time and energy in one’s day! I wonder if I’ll ever get used to that! (Ok, I know this sounds funny and kinda obvious, but it’s true! .. and everything here seems to take twice as long to do!)

Cette semaine consistait primordialement à faire des travaux d’école; commencer mon étude ethnographique, appliquer pour des bourses pour l’an prochain, etc. J’ai aussi commencé à me familiariser avec le matériel de linguistique disponible de la langue Mpumpong. J’ai aussi pris le temps de relaxer et de renouveler mon énergie et priant et en lisant la Bible. J’ai été surprise du fait que les tâches ménagères –laver la vaisselle et les vêtements, préparer la nourriture, nettoyer…- prennent tant de temps et d’énergie! J’espère bien être capable de m’y habituer bientôt!  (Ok, je sais que c’est évident tout ça, mais je vous assure que c’est vrai! En plus, tout ici semble prendre deux fois plus de temps à faire!)

Next week, Andrea and I will be helping out at a Middle School retreat at RFIS-Rain Forest International School. It is mainly a school for expats and missionary children that was started by SIL members (SIL is the Cameroonian branch of Wycliffe). Hopefully we will be able to help as much as possible! I will update you on that!

La semaine prochaine, Andrea et moi allons aider à RFIS-Rain Forest International School. Ils organisent une semaine de camp de jour pour les secondaires 1 et 2 (grades 7 and 8). RFIS est une école fondée par SIL, la branche Camerounaise de Wycliffe, qui cible les enfants d’expatriés et les enfants de missionnaires. J’espère pouvoir aider d’une façon ou d’une autre; je vous tiens au courant!
